I spent a couple of days in Edinburgh with Alastair Cook, Al Brydon and Ken Gray learning how to make Tintype photographs. A few willing models and here's the results. Was really interesting to learn the process, I can see how it can become addictive!
Double exposure portrait of myself by Al Brydon.
I assisted MFA student Alexander White on his 'Sculpture as Place' workshop as part of his final module. Yorkshire Sculpture Park offered the Boathouse to enable the workshop to go ahead and fifteen free tickets all were booked in the week beforehand. We had access to the space from the Friday where we used the time to set up what we needed for the following day.
The premise of the workshop included drawing, model-making and informal discussions around the idea of ‘sculpture as place’, with possible selected works by participants be included within the upcoming degree show. My role was to document the event and due to size of the group we split into two so we could focus on the different materials, be it the chicken wire and mod rock or the craft straws and spray paint.
The day went really smoothly with the participants responding well to the set up, getting hands on and involved with what we offered. Some great pieces were created and ideas thought through, everyone seemed to enjoy the day. Photos of some pieces are as follows:
What I gained from helping out with this workshop is the sense of professionalism that came with working with a well established venue such as the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The trust that was given to a couple of students to have access to areas of the park and the help they offered was second to none. The University setting can only help so much and there's a lot of red tape to get through before anything is able to happen so this was a refreshing change and one that has allowed me to see what is viable when I finish my course. Many thanks to Alex for letting me be a part of his event.
